The Mystery of Why We Dream?

Introduction

For millennia, dreams have drifted between the boundaries of our conscious reality and the deep unknown, leaving a profound impact on both human history and our daily lives. They are a universal, natural part of the human experience—yet their true nature remains one of our most enduring mysteries.

Why do we experience these vivid, nightly journeys, and why do they influence our waking minds so deeply? While modern neuroscience attempts to map the physical pathways of the sleeping brain, psychology, philosophy, quantum physics, and spiritual traditions offer vastly different, mind-bending explanations. Are dreams simply random neural firings, or are they a gateway to parallel worlds and unseen dimensions? Let’s explore

What Neuroscience Still Doesn’t Know

During Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, the brain’s emotional network particularly the amygdala and other structures of the limbic system becomes highly active. This helps explain why dreams are often filled with intense emotions such as joy, fear, sadness, or anxiety. However, many questions remain unanswered. Why do some dreams leave a lasting emotional impression while others disappear within seconds of waking?

Why are certain dreams remembered for years, while most are forgotten almost immediately?

These unanswered questions continue to make dreams one of the greatest mysteries of human consciousness.

In 1957 physicist Hugh Everett III proposed the Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI)

Hugh Everett III, physicist known for many worlds theory and dream research

of quantum mechanics. According to this interpretation,

Every quantum event gives rise to multiple parallel realities rather than a single outcome.

Instead of one universe following one path, reality continually branches into countless possible universes.

The Many-Worlds Interpretation remains one of the most fascinating and most debated ideas in modern physics.

If another version of ourselves exists somewhere within these parallel realities, could there ever be a way for information to pass between them?

Perhaps such communication does not occur through direct physical contact, but through subtle experiences such as dreams, intuition, unexplained warnings, or visions of future events that only make sense after they unfold.

Whether this is truly possible remains unknown, but it offers an intriguing way of thinking about the mystery of dreams.

Dreams in the Islamic Perspective

Islam describes sleep as a form of minor death, during which the soul temporarily separates from the physical body while remaining connected to it.

According to Ibn al-Qayyim:

  • Sleep is a minor death.
  • During sleep, the soul’s connection to the body becomes weaker but is not completely severed.
  • This temporary separation allows human beings to experience dreams.
  • This understanding offers a spiritual explanation for why dreams can sometimes feel more real than ordinary imagination.

The Unseen World and Higher Dimensions

The Mystery of Why We Dream?
The Mystery of Why We Dream?

One possible explanation is that these beings exist beyond the limits of our ordinary perception, separated from us by unseen veils or dimensions. Human beings experience the world through three spatial dimensions, yet reality itself may extend beyond what our senses can perceive.

If such dimensions exist, these unseen veils may prevent direct interaction between different forms of creation.

Some scholars and thinkers have suggested that if a being were to cross from one dimension into another,

it would require a transformation suitable for that realm. Likewise, if a human being could somehow enter another dimension, the physical body might

not be capable of surviving such a transition without undergoing a fundamental change.

Although this idea remains speculative, it offers one possible way of understanding how different realms of existence could remain separate while still occasionally interacting

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) once said to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):

“If I wished, the mountains would walk with me as gold.”

It is narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that the horizon of the sky split open, and an angel emerged from it. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that part of the angel’s body folded into itself as it descended. The angel then contracted its form until it appeared before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Some interpret this narration as indicating that angels assume a form suitable for the physical world when interacting with human beings. If this understanding is correct, then moving from one realm to another may require a corresponding transformation in form before such interaction becomes possible.

Conclusion

When we fall asleep, we enter what many describe as a minor death, a state in which the soul temporarily leaves the physical body and is freed from its earthly confinement. During this journey, the soul may experience realities that are inaccessible while we are awake. At times, it may witness future events, and at other times, the veil separating our dimension from others is lifted, allowing us to perceive beings such as jinn that normally remain hidden from human sight.

In this state, the soul may encounter many different experiences. Some are peaceful, while others can be frightening or even harmful. Certain unseen beings may attempt to harm the soul, leaving behind pain, fear, or even physical marks that remain on the body after awakening. Although these experiences are often dismissed as mere nightmares, they may hold a far deeper reality than most people realize.

Dreams are not simply random images created during sleep; they are journeys into a realm that the physical body can never enter. They provide access to worlds beyond our own, where unseen beings may communicate with us, deliver warnings, reveal hidden truths, or, in some cases, seek to deceive or frighten us. Through dreams, messages may be received, signs may be shown, and glimpses of future events may be revealed. If we stop dismissing dreams as meaningless illusions, we may begin to understand the profound purpose they can serve.

Some dreams bring hope, guidance, and glad tidings, while others carry fear, trials, or warnings. Their influence is not limited to the soul alone but may also affect the physical body. Injuries sustained within a dream that later appear on the body are believed to occur because, during sleep, the barrier between dimensions becomes thinner, allowing certain unseen beings to come close enough to interact with us.

There are moments when the soul becomes aware that it is within the realm of dreams. It may struggle to return to the body, sensing danger, or remain calm, recognizing that it is simply passing through another plane of existence. Dreams are, therefore, more than stories created by the mind, they are a gateway through which the soul can temporarily access another dimension.

Perhaps the places we visit, the beings we encounter, and the events we witness in our dreams are not imaginary at all. Perhaps they truly exist beyond the boundaries of our physical world, waiting just beyond the veil that separates one dimension from another.
