JINN POSSESSION OR MEDICAL ILLNESS?

The Fine Line Between Faith and Medicine

In today's world, we see that almost every person suffers from one illness or another. In search of relief from these illnesses, hardships, and difficulties, we sometimes turn to doctors and sometimes to those who perform spiritual healing. This is because we seek freedom from our suffering rather than trying to understand its true cause. If we do not understand ourselves, how can we explain to others the struggles we are facing? We cannot truly overcome any illness or problem until we identify its root cause and try to separate it from our lives, and that needs realization and effort to heal and overcome that illness.

The Reality of Jinn

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said:

"Only a few groups among the ignorant philosophers, doctors, and those similar to them denied the existence of the jinn, whereas the majority of nations and groups have affirmed their existence."

Reference: Ibn Taymiyyah, Majmu' al-Fatawa, Vol. 19 p.9

There are many stories and accounts concerning the jinn, but distinguishing between what is authentic and what is fabricated can often be difficult. However, when we reflect upon the Qur'an and the Sunnah, many questions begin to find their answers.

The jinn exist in different categories. Among them are those who obey Allah and those who follow Shaytan. They possess different abilities and characteristics. Some are able to fly, some travel through water, and others cross vast deserts and wildernesses. However, our focus here is not on the abilities or existence of the jinn themselves, but rather on the illnesses and harms that may be caused by them.

The jinn may have certain powers over human beings, such as interfering with their homes by setting fires, throwing furniture or household objects, appearing in human form, or causing various forms of physical harm. These harms may include paralysis of a limb, tightness in the chest, persistent headaches, or other forms of sickness for which medical treatment appears ineffective or even worsens the condition. In some cases, they may affect a person's mind, resulting in insanity or other severe disturbances. However, such cases and such powers over human beings are extremely limited.

Madness and Epilepsy Caused by the Jinn

Allah says:

"Those who consume riba will not stand on the Day of Resurrection except as one stands who is being beaten by Shaytan into insanity."

Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah (2:275)

Imam al-Qurtubi commented that this verse refutes those who deny that epilepsy may be caused by the jinn and claim that it results only from physical causes, while also denying that Shaytan can affect a person or cause insanity.

It was narrated from Safiyyah bint Huyayy (R.A) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"Indeed, Shaytan flows through the son of Adam like the flow of blood."

Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari 3281, Sahih Muslim 2175

Types of Sickness and Harm Caused by the Jinn

The jinn may cause different types of sickness and harm that affect a person's psychology, emotions, body, wealth, possessions, business, relationships, and studies. Such afflictions may occur either through direct interference by the jinn or through witchcraft (sihr).

These harms may include:

  1. Intense fear

  2. Psychological and nervous disorders such as insanity, depression, anxiety, tension, epilepsy, waswasa (shaytan whispers), and personality disturbances.

  3. Physical illnesses that medicine is unable to treat and for which no clear medical cause can be found.

  4. Hallucinations

  5. Stirring up hatred, enmity, and division between people, including spouses, business partners, friends, and family members.

  6. Female health problems such as infertility, excessive bleeding, menstrual irregularities, and infections.

  7. Sexual problems such as impotence and premature ejaculation.

  8. Interference with homes and material possessions, including fires, moving furniture, or throwing stones at houses.

Psychological and Nervous Diseases

Among the illnesses attributed to jinn affliction are psychological and nervous disorders such as insanity, depression, anxiety, and similar conditions. However, it must be noted that neglecting medical and psychological treatment is not the correct approach. There is no contradiction between treatment through the Qur'an and professional psychological treatment.

There should be room for Qur'anic treatment alongside conventional healthcare. If a patient responds positively to Qur'anic treatment and improves, then all praise is due to Allah. If the patient does not respond, the Qur'an itself carries no harmful side effects.

Similarly, in some physical illnesses, if a condition does not improve despite medical treatment, then Qur'anic Ruqyah should also be considered.

Understanding Mental Illness

Mental illnesses often resemble symptoms that are attributed to jinn possession, which can lead to confusion. As a result, some people mistakenly confuse mental illness with affliction caused by jinn or witchcraft.

When assessing a patient, it is important to ask certain questions in order to better understand the nature of the problem.

The practitioner should determine the type of sickness, harm, or difficulty from which the patient is suffering.

The nature of a person's dreams may sometimes help the practitioner identify whether the problem appears related to revenge, attachment, or witchcraft.

Some important questions include:

  • Does the patient find it difficult to remember Allah, read the Qur'an, or listen to the Qur'an?

  • Does the patient become unusually sleepy or drowsy when listening to the Qur'an?

  • Does the patient experience pain moving through different parts of the body, stomach pain, or numbness in the limbs?

  • Does the patient feel an urge to cry without an apparent reason?

  • Does the patient experience severe tightness in the chest?

  • Does the patient suffer from persistent headaches that are not relieved by medication?

  • Are there menstrual irregularities in female patients?

These are some of the general questions that may help a practitioner understand the nature of the problem.

Conclusion

Jinn may afflict human beings in different ways, affecting them mentally, physically, and spiritually. They may weaken a person spiritually and, through various forms of deception, cause confusion and distress. In some cases, a person may begin to believe that they are suffering solely from a mental illness and may dismiss everything they experience as a product of their imagination.

Doctors deserve great respect and appreciation. Whenever we are faced with illness, whether minor or severe, we often seek their help. Those who dedicate their lives to the medical profession deserve honor and respect. May Allah reward them abundantly and bless their knowledge. The purpose of a doctor is to identify illness and help bring healing to the patient.

However, when medical examinations fail to reveal a cause and a patient continues to suffer despite treatment, doctors should not simply continue prescribing medication indefinitely. In such cases, spiritual treatment may also deserve consideration alongside medical care.

In cases of jinn possession, a person may display unusual speech, actions, or behavior that appear beyond normal human conduct. Sometimes medication may show little benefit or may even seem to worsen the condition. In such situations, treatment through the Qur'an and Sunnah may be necessary.

It is also important to understand that even those who are devoted to worship and sincere in their Tawheed may, at times, be affected by jinn or witchcraft. The assumption that anyone afflicted by jinn or sihr must have weak faith is a misconception that should be abandoned.

Spiritual treatment deserves attention just as physical and psychological treatment do. During such trials, a person should place their trust in Allah and avoid amulets, charms, and fraudulent healers. The jinn often deceive people by making them believe that such objects or individuals possess special powers. Through such deception, they attempt to weaken a person's faith and Tawheed.

When faced with these kinds of difficulties, a person should adhere to the Qur'an and Sunnah and seek assistance from a trustworthy and knowledgeable raqi who understands the tricks, deception, and methods of the jinn.

Today, as society continues to drift further away from spirituality, our ancient enemy remains watchful and active.

There is no doubt that Shaytan is a clear enemy to mankind.

"Indeed, Shaytan is an enemy to you, so take him as an enemy. He only invites his followers so that they may become among the companions of the Blaze."
