What the Evidence Really Supports

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years in many cultures as a method of improving concentration, emotional balance, and spiritual awareness. In recent years, the concept of the “third eye” has gained renewed attention through books, online discussions, and spiritual teachers who associate it with the pineal gland. Some believe that meditation can awaken this hidden ability, allowing people to access higher states of consciousness or extraordinary experiences. Others argue that these claims are not supported by modern neuroscience.

One of the earliest philosophers to give special importance to the pineal gland was the 17th century French philosopher René Descartes. Descartes described the pineal gland as the “seat of the soul” and believed that it served as the point of interaction between the human mind and the physical body. He argued that consciousness and thought were connected to this small structure located near the center of the brain.

It is important to note that Descartes’ theory was a philosophical explanation rather than a scientific discovery. Modern neuroscience does not accept the pineal gland as the location of the soul or consciousness said by Descartes, R. in 1649, he shared his findings about this in his famous book The Passions of the Soul.

Scientific research has established that the pineal gland is involved in:

  • Melatonin production
  • Regulation of the sleep-wake cycle
  • Circadian rhythm
  • Responding indirectly to light signals from the retina

According to Arendt, J. (1995) said that there is currently no scientific evidence demonstrating that the pineal gland functions as a supernatural “third eye” or grants paranormal abilities (Melatonin and the Mammalian Pineal Gland.)

Meditation and the Brain

Meditation is widely studied in psychology and neuroscience. Rather than emptying the mind, meditation trains attention and awareness.

Research suggests that regular meditation may:

  • Improve concentration and sustained attention.
  • Reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Enhance emotional regulation.
  • Increase self-awareness.
  • Lower activation of the body’s stress response.

These benefits are supported by numerous scientific studies. However, these findings do not demonstrate that meditation activates supernatural abilities or permanently alters the pineal gland in the way some spiritual teachings describe and this is supported through the research studies conducted by many researchers of different Eras including: Davidson, R. J., & Goleman, D. (1977); Tang, Y. Y., Hölzel, B. K., & Posner, M. I. (2015).

Dr. Joe Dispenza presents a different interpretation of the pineal gland. 

According to his teaching the pineal gland is closely connected to what many traditions call the “third eye.”

He proposes that deep meditation involves several stages

  1. Relaxing the body and quieting the mind.
  2. Shifting brain activity from highly alert states toward calmer states.
  3. Using breathing techniques and visualization to direct what he describes as life energy upward through the spine.

4.  Combining focused attention with elevated emotions such as gratitude, love, and joy.

Dr. Dispenza argues that this process may activate the pineal gland.

Resulting in expanded awareness, mystical experiences, altered perception of time, and a stronger sense of connection with consciousness.

He also suggests that the pineal gland may function as a type of receiver or antenna for higher states of consciousness (In his book – Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon).

The pineal gland is a God-given organ present in every human being. It is responsible for our ability to think, understand, and dream. Since every person is born with a pineal gland, there is no need to artificially activate it. It functions naturally as part of the human body.

There are certain factors that can diminish its potential, while others can enhance its activity and allow it to operate at a higher level. When the pineal gland reaches this higher state, a person becomes more aware of their surroundings, develops heightened perception, and is able to sense things beyond ordinary awareness. At this stage, consciousness may remain active even during sleep, allowing individuals to experience dreams with an exceptional level of clarity and awareness.

The pineal gland is the human third eye. When it operates at a higher level, it can give rise to extraordinary or supernatural experiences, including astral projection and other phenomena that extend beyond ordinary human perception.

Meditation is one method that can help the pineal gland reach this higher state, but it is not the only one. Some individuals are naturally born with a pineal gland that functions at a much higher level than average. These people tend to perceive mysterious or supernatural phenomena more easily and possess an unusually heightened sense of awareness.

Individuals with a naturally heightened pineal gland may also experience certain challenges. They often find it difficult to achieve deep, restful sleep because they remain conscious even while sleeping. Their dreams carry the same significance as real-life experiences and are often exceptionally vivid, meaningful, and memorable.  A highly active pineal gland, or third eye, is therefore associated with an increased level of awareness that extends beyond ordinary human experience.

The Bottom Line

After spending so many hours and days spent while figuring out what is actually the truth behind the connection of meditation with Third Eye Opening, I come to find that there is a clear contradiction in this area but where the majority stands there is no connection directly of meditation with Third Eye Opening. I will definitely share my personal opinion that this is being now commercialised and on social media most the spiritual healers and yogic influencers are now working on thought leadership and rebranding their offers of meditation to make them look more lucrative for the users by connecting it with concepts like remove your pineal gland blockages and open your third eye.
