On a breezy and cold morning in London, Resham Khan and Jameel Mukhtar were waiting in their car when a man approached and threw a corrosive substance at them through the car window. Both cousins suffered severe burns and were permanently disfigured as a result of the attack. The attacker was later identified as John Tomlin and was sentenced to life in prison for causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The incident of bigotry and extremism received widespread media attention and sparked a wider conversation about the growing problem of acid attacks in the UK.
According to observation considering all such incidents there are several reasons which led certain societies which are becoming more extreme and intolerant. Some of the factors include:
- Political and economic instability: In times of economic and political uncertainty, people may be more susceptible to extremist ideologies that promise solutions to their problems.
- Lack of education and exposure to diverse perspectives: Lack of education and exposure to different cultures, religions, and ideas can lead to a narrow-minded view of the world and an increased susceptibility to extremist ideologies.
- Social media and technology: The internet and social media can provide a platform for extremist groups to spread their message and recruit new members.
- Historical conflicts and tensions: Historical conflicts and tensions between different groups can continue to fuel resentment and extremism.
To fight against bigotry and extremism, it is important to address the underlying issues and promote education, exposure to diverse perspectives, and opportunities for dialogue and understanding. Additionally, authorities must work to counteract extremist propaganda and disrupt the recruitment and funding networks of extremist groups.
